Weapons in School
It is the intent of NVA to take action that ensures and provides a safe learning environment for all students. To that end, NVA prohibits students or adults from having items in school or on school grounds that are weapons (i.e., guns, switchblades), that could be used as weapons (i.e., pocket knives), or that are "look-alike" weapons (i.e. plastic guns or knives). Minnesota Statute 609.605, subdivision ID lists the possession of a weapon on school property as a felony offense.
Any allegation of a weapons violation will be investigated. If there is a determination that the policy has been broken, police will be notified for possible "charges," parents will be notified and the student will be: a) expelled from school, or b) suspended from school.
The above will occur whether the student purposely or inadvertently brings a weapon to school. If there is an item inadvertently brought to school and the student turns it into the office immediately upon realizing this, there will be no violation of the policy considered.
Personal Safety
Each student is entitled to feel personally safe at school from physical and verbal violence and assault. Any student, who experiences a deliberate physical act that injures or receives threats of physical injury, should immediately report the incident to school personnel. Verbal statements or hand symbols that are obscene, degrading, or are meant to intimidate, embarrass, or humiliate an individual or group should also be reported to school personnel.
School personnel, local police departments and social service agencies will investigate personal safety concerns.
